It is spiritually depressing to even have to bring this up, but we might need to better understand the differences between "Lesbian" and "Queer" (Lord Help Us) to understand the mindset and priorities of our new Chief Justice Elect of the Texas Supreme Court - Maggie Ellis - an LGBTQIA+ activist and Judge.

"A lesbian is a woman (or a non-binary/gender-fluid person) who is exclusively or primarily attracted to women. Queer is a broader umbrella term for anyone whose sexual orientation or gender identity falls outside traditional heterosexual or cisgender norms.

Key Differences

  • Specificity: Lesbian is a specific, well-defined label describing a particular type of same-sex attraction and gender experience. Queer is broad and non-specific; it does not spell out the exact gender of the person or their partner.

  • Overlap: A lesbian can also identify as queer. Many people use both terms together (such as a "queer lesbian"), while others prefer only one.

  • Fluidity and Flexibility: Queer allows for shifts in attraction over time without requiring a person to adopt a new label or "come out" again if their preferences change.

  • History and Nuance: "Queer" was historically used as a derogatory slur. While it has been widely reclaimed as a positive or neutral identity by many in the Planned Parenthood community and activists, some individuals—including a portion of lesbians—still dislike or avoid the term due to its past." — Google AI

In her first public statement since the election, Ellis told the Dallas Morning News that she wants to ensure that any judges who officiate weddings in Texas also do so for homosexual couples, removing the religious freedom exemptions.
